Who is this Grumpy Parrot person anyway?

My name is Bruce Cane and I’m a retired writer now living in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, where I amuse the the local inhabitants with my quirky Spanish. I also like to take photos of really old stone buildings out in the jungle. The deeper into the jungle and the older the buildings, the better.

When not doing either of those things, I share a house with my wife Bonita, a dog named Dug, and two and three quarter cats: Trooper, Smudge, and Mr. Gray. Trooper lost his front right leg to an accident when he was a kitten, so he’s our three quarter cat. It doesn’t slow him down at all.

(In recognition of my pastime, I wanted to name the cat Tripod. Bonita said no. Actually, she didn’t say anything at all, she just looked at me. This means the same thing as no.)

I was born in Toronto, Canada, and that’s where my grown children still live: Patrick—and his fiancé Sarah, Aidan, and Catrina.

If you’ve read the back story of how this website got its name, then you’ll already have deduced that Bonita is from Venezuela. Her Spanish isn’t quirky all.

I returned to photography as a hobbyist in 2015, having last handled at camera while still in college some 30 years earlier. The cameras are a bit different now, but the principals are pretty much the same.

Hopefully you enjoy one or two of the photos on this website. It seems a better alternative to Instagram, although I post there, too.

Well that about wraps it up for the Grumpy Parrot.
